Letters that work differently

LetterHow it works in CVC words
c and kBoth spell /k/. At the start of a CVC word, k comes before e and i (kid, kit) and c comes before a, o and u (cat, cot, cup). At the end, /k/ is usually spelled ck, as in back, so those words have four letters. Yak is a rare three-letter word ending in k.
qIn English, q is almost always followed by u, as in quit. That makes four letters, so there are no three-letter CVC words with q.
xAt the end of a word, x stands for two sounds, /k/ and /s/. Box, fox, fix, mix and six are common in classroom lists, but each has four sounds. The Common Core kindergarten standard leaves out CVC words ending in /x/, so we list them separately below.
y and wAt the start of a word they are consonants: yes, yam, web, wig. At the end they join the vowel to make one sound, as in day and cow, so they never end a CVC word.
h, j and vAll three start CVC words (hat, jam, van). English words almost never end in h, j or v, so these letters don’t end CVC words.
l and rBoth start many CVC words. At the end, r changes the vowel (car, her), and the kindergarten standard leaves out words ending in /l/. Most short words ending in l double it, as in bell.
f, s and z at the endShort words often double these letters (puff, kiss, buzz). Single-letter endings are rare. Bus, yes, gas and his all end in s, and his ends with a /z/ sound.
a, e, i, o, uCVC words start with a consonant, so none start with a vowel. Words like at, in and up are VC words. See VC and CVC words.

x words: short, but not CVC

If your curriculum includes these, teach that x stands for two sounds. Read box as /b/ /o/ /ks/.

Practice with one letter

Choose one letter and read all the words that start with it. Then read the words that end with it. Ask the learner to sort a mixed set into “starts with m” and “ends with m.” For spelling practice with the same words, see spelling CVC words.
