What are CVC words?

CVC stands for consonant-vowel-consonant. Our beginner lists focus on three-letter words with a short vowel in the middle, such as cat, bed, pig, dog, and sun. Each letter represents one sound in these examples.

Say the sounds from left to right and bring them together to read the word. Knowing the letter names is different from knowing the sounds to blend.

Words such as ship can be described as CVC by their three sounds, but have four letters and a digraph. We keep those out of this starter collection. Box has three letters but ends with the two sounds /k/ and /s/, so it is also outside this collection.

Are all three-letter words CVC words?

No. The letters and their sounds matter. The words the and car do not follow the short-vowel pattern used in these lists.

Are CVC words sight words?

CVC describes a spelling or sound pattern. A sight word is a word a reader recognizes automatically. A familiar CVC word can eventually be recognized that way.

How many CVC words are there?

The count depends on the word list, dialect, and whether you count letters or sounds. This starter collection contains 100 selected three-letter words. It is not an exhaustive dictionary.

Which vowel should we begin with?

Use a vowel and consonants your learner has already been taught. Work within your phonics program rather than treating the order of these links as a required sequence.
