About CVC Words

What this site offers

CVC Words is a free resource for one early-reading step: three-letter, short-vowel words such as cat, bed, pig, dog and sun. Everything on the site supports that step:

• Word lists. A searchable list of 100 starter words, a checked bank of 176 CVC words, a page for each short vowel, word families, words by letter, seasonal words and nonsense words.
• Printables. Fifteen free PDFs, from word lists to roll-and-read, tracing and Elkonin box worksheets, plus twelve original picture cards.
• Practice. A missing-vowel game and a worksheet builder that run in the browser without an account.
• Guides. Plain-language guides on teaching CVC words, blending, spelling, kindergarten expectations and what comes next.

Who it is for

The site is written for adults who help children learn to read: parents, caregivers, homeschoolers, tutors and classroom teachers. Children can use the lists, printables and game with an adult, but the explanations are written for the grown-up. Nothing on the site requires an account, and nothing is for sale.

How our content is made

We want every page to be accurate and useful, so we work to a few fixed rules:

1. Facts come from primary sources. Statements about standards, research or assessments are checked against the original document and linked on the page. That includes the Common Core State Standards, the US Institute of Education Sciences practice guide on foundational reading, and the DIBELS 8th Edition guide.
2. Word lists are checked word by word. Our CVC bank uses one definition: three letters, three sounds and a short vowel, with no final l, r or x. Every word was checked against open English word-frequency data and reviewed by hand. Nonsense words were checked the same way to make sure they are not real words, names or slang.
3. Advice is labeled as advice. Teaching routines and activity ideas are our own practical suggestions. We don’t present them as research findings, and we don’t promise results.
4. Nothing is invented. We don’t publish made-up statistics, quotes, credentials, reviews or success stories.
5. Tools are disclosed. Pages are drafted with the help of AI writing tools. Each one is then checked against the cited sources and our word bank before it is published.
6. Illustrations are original. The pictures and printables were made for this site. We don’t copy worksheets, images or text from other publishers.

Review, updates and corrections

Every page shows when it was published and when it was last updated. When we change what a page says, we change the updated date too. The content has not yet been reviewed by an independent early-literacy specialist, and we won’t say it has until that is true.

If you spot a mistake, please tell us through the contact form and choose “Correction or feedback on content.” We check every correction request against the source and fix confirmed errors.

Who runs CVC Words

cvcwords.co is an independent website run by its owner. We don’t yet publish individual author profiles or the owner’s business details on this page. We will add them once they are ready, rather than show anything we can’t stand behind. In the meantime, the contact form reaches the people responsible for the site.

The site is independent. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any curriculum publisher, school district, or the organizations whose standards and research we cite.

How the site is funded

At the moment the site carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no sponsored content. If that changes, we will label paid content clearly and update this page, the disclaimer and the privacy policy first.
